Plan your visit

Suggested planning scope below. Use the official links for current bookings, services and access.

Suggested time or scope
A generous half-day; a full day if entering two heritage sites.
Route or planning approach
Choose your harbour crossing or land route first and check the return service.
Budget considerations
Allow for transport, one optional interior and a meal; the neighbourhood walks need not be expensive.
Access & comfort
Waterfront sections and inland lanes differ in gradient and surface.

A practical starting plan

  1. 01

    Start in Birgu

Walk from the waterfront into the older lanes before choosing an interior.

  2. 02

    Choose a theme

Fort St Angelo suits harbour defences; the Inquisitor’s Palace offers a different social history.

  3. 03

    Follow the harbour

Continue towards Cospicua or Senglea if time and energy allow, then return from a sensible point.

Begin with Birgu

Start near the waterfront and walk into Birgu’s lanes. Notice how quickly the scenery changes from open marina to enclosed neighbourhood. Resist the temptation to fill the afternoon with distant stops; this is a good place to let a short walk expand.

Follow the water

Continue towards Cospicua, watching how the harbour works as both a view and a place of daily activity. Walking distances are manageable for many visitors, but heat and uneven surfaces can make a route harder than the map suggests.

Give Senglea its own time

Senglea has a different perspective on the same harbour. Choose a viewpoint, stop for a drink and look back towards Valletta. You do not have to cover every street in all three cities to have a worthwhile visit.

Before you cross

Check the ferry operator for the current timetable and any weather disruption. Plan a return that does not depend on the very last sailing. A crossing followed by a walk and a leisurely meal makes a full afternoon without an ambitious itinerary.

Plan the finish as well as the start

A route that ends on a different waterfront can be pleasant, but only if you know how you will leave. Check the terminal or stop you intend to use before setting off. If the group is tired after Birgu, make a long lunch the second part of the visit rather than forcing another city.

Frequently asked questions

Must I walk all three cities?

No. Birgu alone with a cultural stop can fill an enjoyable half-day. Add Cospicua or Senglea because you want to see them, rather than to complete a label.

Which interior should I choose?

Pick Fort St Angelo for the harbour and fortifications, or the Inquisitor’s Palace for domestic spaces, authority and social history. Check current visitor routes before choosing.

Can I visit from Valletta without a car?

A harbour service or a land-based public transport journey may suit. Consult the actual operator and route for your date; allow for the walk at both ends and an alternative if a sailing is disrupted.
