Dwejra: a landscape that keeps changing
Dwejra deserves attention for the landscape that exists today, rather than a search for an old postcard view.

Plan your visit
Suggested planning scope below. Use the official links for current bookings, services and access.
- Suggested time or scope
- A generous coastal stop; longer for an organised activity.
- Route or planning approach
- Use Dwejra or the Inland Sea as the destination and confirm how you will leave.
- Budget considerations
- Keep a shore visit separate from any paid boat or diving activity.
- Access & comfort
- Rocky, exposed ground and sea-level routes may be unsuitable for some visitors.
A practical starting plan
- 01
Read the present landscape
Take in the Inland Sea and surrounding rock rather than searching for the former arch.
- 02
Choose a safe land route
Keep clear of wave-washed platforms and uncertain edges.
- 03
Add an activity only if suitable
Ask the operator about conditions and arrangements; staying on land is a complete option.
Look at the whole setting
The Inland Sea and surrounding coast make Dwejra a place for observation as much as activity. Notice the contrast between the enclosed water and the open coast. The Azure Window collapsed in 2017; photographs showing the standing arch describe a past landscape. Take time to understand the present setting instead of looking for a monument that is no longer there.
Choose a cautious shore visit
Stay on clear routes and keep well back from wave-washed rock and edges. The official destination guide warns about approaching the shore in rough weather. Do not interpret another visitor’s position as evidence of safe footing. A boat outing, where offered, is a separate decision requiring suitable conditions and an operator’s assessment.
Make it the main coastal stop
Give Dwejra a proper part of the day rather than ten minutes between other bays. Bring what you need for an exposed visit and arrange transport back. Diving requires an appropriate operator and experience; the famous underwater sites are not instructions for independent entry. A land-based visit can be rewarding without entering the water at all.
Look for the connections between water and rock
Move slowly enough to notice the enclosed Inland Sea, the open coast and the changing forms around them. These relationships explain why Dwejra is more than the location of one former landmark. Avoid packing the stop so tightly that you only have time to arrive and leave.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still see the Azure Window?
The standing arch collapsed in 2017. Older photographs show a previous landscape; Dwejra remains worth visiting for the formations and setting that exist today.
Do I need to dive to enjoy Dwejra?
No. The coastal landscape and Inland Sea can be enjoyed on a land-based visit. Diving is a separate activity requiring appropriate experience and operator advice.
Is a boat through the Inland Sea tunnel part of every visit?
No. Treat any offered outing as an optional, condition-dependent activity with its own boarding and payment arrangements.
